I laughed and then I was terrified. No joke! I thought this book was going to be a funny horror novel (if such a thing exists) but by the halfway point, I was considering reading it with the lights on. It's a clever concept; at an Ikea-type store, employees investigate strange occurrences at night, but the plot takes a Hellraiser inspired turn when several people try an amateur seance. The first half of the book reads like a parody, the last half like the good parts of a Stephen King novel. The characters read like most people you've worked with, which is to say flawed and real. But the parts I enjoyed the most were the chapter introductions with fake Ikea inspired furniture that turns sinister as the book progresses. Maybe working retail made the story seem all too familiar...who knows what really goes on in the store at night? Overall, it's an incredibly enjoyable horror story.
HPB Staff ReviewOn the surface it's a horror romp through an IKEA-like store after hours. But afterword's, good luck looking at a shopping mall or windowless retail establishment again. Watch the main character Amy as she fights to not only survive, but find meaning in the drudgery of her everyday life.
HPB Staff ReviewLaughs, shivers, adventure, all in one place...a really fun read!!!
If you have ever had a retail job and hated it, this book is for you! Our protagonist works at a store that resembles an Ikea a little too much. She hates her job but joined management because of financial strain, her car is breaking down and she slightly regrets dropping out of college. Sound familiar? Just me? Well, now she has to deal with someone breaking into the store and smearing stuff all over the walls. Her manager forces her and some coworkers (who like to think they're going to be the next Ghost Adventure crew) to work the night shift to get to the bottom of the break-in-bandit. High jinx ensue. It's equally scary, funny, familiar and breathtaking.
HPB Staff ReviewIt is a quick read with just under 245 pages, it is written in a bigger size font. Despite its fun IKEA-style look, it is quite graphic and grotesque in its descriptions. I would definitely read this again in the future. If you like quirky and different books, this is a great read. I would recommend this book for ages 15+, but if you're up for it go ahead.
