Overview

"It certainly filled the Battlestar Galactica-shaped hole in my heart." --Victoria Aveyard, bestselling author of The Red Queen

Read the New York Times bestselling blockbuster that critics are calling "out-of-this-world awesome." The first in an epic sci-fi series unlike anything else out there.

Kady thought breaking up with Ezra was the worst thing she'd ever been through. That was before her planet was invaded. Now, with enemy fire raining down on them, Kady and Ezra are forced to fight their way onto one of the evacuating craft, with an enemy warship in hot pursuit.

But the warship could be the least of their problems. A deadly plague has broken out and is mutating, with terrifying results; the fleet's AI, which should be protecting them, may actually be their biggest threat; and nobody in charge will say what's really going on. As Kady plunges into a web of data hacking to get to the truth, it's clear only one person can help her bring it all to light: Ezra.

Told through a fascinating dossier of hacked documents--including emails, schematics, military files, IMs, medical reports, interviews, and more--Illuminae is the first book in a heart-stopping, high-octane trilogy about lives interrupted, the price of truth, and the courage of everyday heroes.

"Brace yourself, because you're about to be immersed in a mindscape that you'll never want to leave." --Marie Lu, author of the bestselling Legend series

"Prepare yourselves for Illuminae." --EW.com

"You're not in for an ordinary novel experience. . . ." --Bustle.com

"A truly interactive experience. . . . A fantastically fun ride." --MTV.com

  • A Great Starter Sci-fi

    Katherine F. - 1 year ago

Illuminae is a YA science fiction novel that is set hundreds of years in the future, in a time where humans have more or less colonized the entire universe. It is told in an unconventional format, consisting mostly of emails and instant messaging exchanges between various characters. Kady Grant and Ezra Mason, the novel's protagonists, are both traveling through space in two separate ships full of refugees. They have fled Kerenza IV, their home planet, in hopes of reaching a place that is safe from the people who recently attacked it. But with an enemy ship in hot pursuit of them, can they ever hope to reach safety in time? Illuminae will have you rapidly turning pages, wanting to know what happens next. The stakes are high in the beginning, but they just keep getting higher and higher the more the story unfolds. Action-packed and suspenseful, Illuminae is a great read for any lover of sci-fi and is a good starter novel for anyone who may be wanting to dip their toes in the genre. Definitely worth a read!

  • Aussie YA writing team takes on intergalactic bio-war!

    Victoria F. - 1 year 9 months ago

Described as a young adult space opera epistolary novel, "Illuminae" is *exceptional* in style, delivery, and plot (a BEAUTIFUL book). Told in a dossier style as a series of hacked Instant-Message conversations, video surveillance, emails, phone transcripts, and the inner streams of consciousness that can only come from Artificial Intelligence running the show from the inside (INSANITY). The first in a trilogy of connected perspectives, life and death carelessly hangs in the balance of Kady Grant and Ezra Mason as they are forced to enlist prematurely, employ skills otherwise useless outside of a war setting and (excuse me) clean up the flung sh** from the fan. 10/10. Would read it again. (I've read it 3 times already).

i found it really hard to get into at the beginning. but it’s probably just bc i wasn’t ready to be THROWN into the world of space & technology. you know how it be. but after about the halfway point, it did they really sucked in. i found the plague element & AIDAN really interesting & cool to read!! maybe it’s just books based in space but MAN was i scared at some parts of the book lol & i CRIED, gasp i know!! kady & ezra’s relationship didn’t really appeal to me but i feel like that’ll change as the series goes on. in other news i did get lowkey attached to an AI? lolololol #SpringPicks

I love how they set up the book, such an amazing reading journey. I definitely would say read along with the audiobook. They did a whole reading cast and was so beautifully done.

  • Amazing book!

I really enjoyed this book and the rest of the series! The writing style is very unique and makes for a very compelling read. I believe you get a deeper understanding of the things going on in this science fiction future world by reading it through a series of classified documents, censored emails, interviews, and others. I really loved the style of writing and I found it very fitting for the story being told. I definitely recommend this book for anyone who loves science fiction or just anyone who is looking to try reading something different! #SummerReading
