  • It's not unlikely fans of Judy Blume will love this book!

If you're like me, your childhood probably included a reading and re-reading of "Tales of a 4th Grade Nothing" or "Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret". As a young adult, I was skeptical that any adult novel by JB may skew my memories of heartwarming coming-of-age tales that shaped my early teenage years. "In the Unlikely Event" gives readers the same warm fuzzy feelings they remember from their childhoods; with mother-daughter bonding and puppy love, but also covers more adult topics as it centers around a small town in the 1950's dealing with a series of mysterious plane crashes. The book felt very Judy Blume-esque while still very much being for adults. You will love this book!

  • Beautiful Coming of Age Story in a Tragic Time

    Kristen B. - 5 years 2 months ago

In the Unlikely Event is based in Elizabeth, New Jersey, during a very scary time when three separate planes crashed in the town after takeoff from Newark. The reader gets to see the novel from several different characters' points of view, but my favorite character was the heart of the novel Miri. On top of three plane crashes in Miri's town, she is a teenager who is just starting to have serious relationships, is dealing with her mom, and then also meets several long lost family members. Miri is just trying to grow up and survive during these tragic times. I was so excited to read Judy Blume's newest book that once I got my hands on a copy, I dropped everything else to read it. And I became even more excited once I learned that the storyline is based on true events from her childhood. I was not disappointed. This coming of age story comes together beautifully at the end, when we fast forward to see Miri and the town of Elizabeth many years later. I very much enjoyed reading Miri's story through this novel and am excited to see what comes next from Judy Blume!

AMAZING BOOK! Very realistic storytelling, based on true events. Don’t read this right before you have to go on an airplane however.
