Overview

The bestselling debut, with over a million copies sold, that launched Tana French, author of The Witch Elm and "the most important crime novelist to emerge in the past 10 years" (The Washington Post).

"Required reading for anyone who appreciates tough, unflinching intelligence and ingenious plotting." --The New York Times

Soon to be a Starz series

As dusk approaches a small Dublin suburb in the summer of 1984, mothers begin to call their children home. But on this warm evening, three children do not return from the dark and silent woods. When the police arrive, they find only one of the children gripping a tree trunk in terror, wearing blood-filled sneakers, and unable to recall a single detail of the previous hours.

Twenty years later, the found boy, Rob Ryan, is a detective on the Dublin Murder Squad and keeps his past a secret. But when a twelve-year-old girl is found murdered in the same woods, he and Detective Cassie Maddox--his partner and closest friend--find themselves investigating a case chillingly similar to the previous unsolved mystery. Now, with only snippets of long-buried memories to guide him, Ryan has the chance to uncover both the mystery of the case before him and that of his own shadowy past.

Richly atmospheric and stunning in its complexity, In the Woods is utterly convincing and surprising to the end.

  • Atmospheric, gloomy mystery perfect for a rainy day

    Holly S. - 1 year 7 months ago

If you like film noir, police procedurals, and hauntingly dark mysteries, this is the novel for you. The talented Tana French bases her novels with the Dublin Murder Squad in Ireland, a setting that is just as much a character as the protagonists themselves. Her style of writing takes a bit of getting used to, as it is mostly dialogue-driven, but it's worth the adjustment to get to the end of this twisty, slow-burn of a thriller. The great news is, if you like it, there are four more books in the series!

This wasn’t your average suspense novel. It was captivating from start to finish and I can’t wait to read the next one in the series. Detective Rob Ryan and Detective Cassie Maddox — partners and close friends — are investigating the murder of a twelve year-old girl found in the woods of a Dublin suburb. Twenty years before, three children played in the same stretch of woods as they often did. But on that particular day, two of the children disappeared and were never found. The third child was found alive, gripping a tree trunk in terror with blood-filled shoes and no recollection of what happened. That child was Detective Rob Ryan and he has kept his past a secret from everyone. Does Ryan have a chance to uncover both the mystery of the murdered girl and his shadowy past? TW for abuse and sexual assault. #SpringPicks

This is a great detective/mystery book. It got me interested in the genre and is still my favorite. It is dark and lots of twists and turns.
