Stephen King delivers an excellent novel with his "It." The novel has two narratives running parallel throughout the book, a timeline for the main characters as children and a timeline as adults. The novel takes it time to fully develop the plot and characters in order to ensure that the reader is able to be fully immersed in the world. Well written, very imaginative, and of course creepy, "It" is a fantastic read.
HPB Staff ReviewThe terror, which would not end for another 28 years if it ever did end began, as far as I know or can tell, with a boat made from newspaper floating down a gutter swollen with rain. Peering into a storm drain George Denbrough gives us our first glimpse of Pennywise the Dancing Clown who terrorizes the small town of Derry, Maine. In this town, the adults are indifferent to the strange disappearances going on. Seven children known as the Losers Club face off against IT and send it back into slumber for another twenty-eight years. As adults, they reunite one last time to defeat the creature and his deadlights. Stephen Kings novel is a coming of age story hidden inside the guise of a horror novel and I highly recommend it.
HPB Staff ReviewIn this terrifyingly captivating masterwork of the one and only Stephen King, he takes us down the storm drain into a world that will shock you to your core and leave you frozen with fear. If you do not already suffer from Coulrophobia (fear of clowns), you will. Once you close this book all the happy images of Bozo from your childhood will be washed away, and only one clown will remain with you for the rest of your days: Pennywise has come to play. With a film remake due out in 2017, NOW IS THE TIME to run down to your local HPB and pick up IT by Stephen King.
HPB Staff ReviewStephen King is one of the go-to names for horror writing and has written dozens of novels, several of which have been made into movies. "It" is one of his more renowned titles and has been made into both a mini-series and a movie, so naturally it is something I thought to be worth reading once. The characters have depth, and their flaws are delved into on a deeper level than is usually found in fiction, which makes the story that much more complex and engaging. King utilizes a unique approach to introducing the characters, the plot, and the timelines that keep you interested and ties together past, present, and internal conflict beautifully. It is not a short novel, but worth the read if you have a mind to get to know some of the "classics" of horror and want something with more depth than a run-of-the-mill slasher or vampire story.
HPB Staff ReviewHaving not read this book in over 20 years, I was not sure if It would hold up to the test of time. To my pleasant surprise, I was swept back to my childhood with horror at it's best. A pulse racing tale that begins as terrifying as it ends. Stephen King captures your imagination with ghastly creatures that almost jump out of the pages. The characters are richly developed and all lend to a terrific plot, often making it difficult to put the novel down. You might be afraid to turn off the light at night, but the lasting impact the book makes on you will be well worth it.
