In Johannes Cabal author Jonathan L. Howard has created a wonderful protagonist, with no redeeming qualities, that the reader will find wickedly engaging. Introduced in a series of short stories, Johannes Cabal, the Necromancer is the character's first outing in a full-length novel. In the backstory we find that had Cabal sold his soul to the Devil to acquire the secrets of necromancy; however he has discovered that his lack of soul interferes with the magic needed to use this arcane magic to raise the dead. Cabal storms Hell and strikes a deal with Satan for the return of his soul. Cabal must, within two years, return with one hundred signed contracts for the souls to replace his. To this end he is given the reigns of a dark traveling carnival reminiscent of Bradbury's Something Wicked This Way Comes, just as wicked but much more fun. With the aid of his vampire brother Horst and a crew of resurrected freaks and carnies, Cabal travels a path corruption while dealing with insane sorcerers, pocket dimensions, rival carnies, suspicious town folk, demons seeking to prevent him from winning his wager, and his brothers more irritating morality. Great fun.
HPB Staff ReviewJohannes Cabal sold his soul to the devil, and now he needs it back. The main character is cynical, and his humor is dry, and it's fantastic. Never have I loved a grumpy impatient, sometimes selfish, necromancer more. And teamed up with his vampire brother Horst Cabal, they roam the country with their demonic carnival rounding up souls that Johannes can trade for his own.
