They say don't judge a book by its cover, but I often do. I was drawn to Ransom Riggs' YA novels because the cover photo was so "peculiar." I don't like to read YA novels nowadays - but vintage creepy black and white photo? Sold. I was also excited to see more photos throughout the book. Riggs came up with the story from collecting the photos shown in the books. He decided to make up a story for the children in the photos. And thus comes the tale of the Peculiar children. The plot follows sixteen-year-old Jacob Portman. He tragically loses his grandfather in an attack from a vicious and terrifying monster. Determined to get to the bottom of what happened to his grandfather Jacob follows the only clues he has: a box of photographs, letters, and the home his grandfather grew up in on an island off the coast of Wales. This causes him to meet Miss Peregrine and a group of children with strange powers or abilities. Suddenly thrown into their world, Jacob and the children fight for survival and to protect those who are dear to them. Riggs sets up a unique magical world. His villains are creepy and know how to get your blood pumping. There are great suspense scenes. I found some of the character development and dialogue a bit mundane and a good deal predictable, but given that I am reading a book below my age level I was forgiving. Overall I enjoyed it quite a bit (enough to read the next two volumes). I kept thinking, this would make a great movie! And low and behold - Tim Burton will be releasing a film adaptation this September. AND Riggs has announced he will be releasing another book set withing this peculiar world.
HPB Staff ReviewThe first I heard of this book was from a link I had gotten of its book trailer The book trailer itself was eerie, add to that the strange cover, and it got me expecting a haunting thriller type story. However, I was pleasantly surprised. Ransom Riggs has readers follow the story of Jacob who has an overwhelming fondness for his grandfather and the wonderful and mystical stories, accompanied by photographs, that he tells of his childhood during WWII. After Jacob's grandfather is murdered, he follows his grandfather's story out to Wales where he finds the mysterious house and surprisingly all the peculiar children from his grandfather's stories. Throughout the book, Riggs places these strange and vintage photographs that add to his already amazing detail and chilling effect to the story. I would definitely check out this book and the following two books in the series (Hollow City and Library of Souls) before taking a gander at the upcoming movie! Besides the book is always better :)
HPB Staff ReviewTo be completely honest, I picked this book up because everyone was raving about the movie, and I myself enjoy books over their movie counterparts. I didn't expect to like the book. It just seemed weird. However, it is more interesting and complex than I ever expected it to be. It has a bit of everything. Adventure, fantasy, romance, mystery, creepiness. This book is entertaining and unusual. The pictures alone are enough to grab your attention and add so much to the story, which in itself is well-written and flows well. To put it shortly... It's a very weird story......but a very interesting story.
HPB Staff ReviewYour first step into this remarkable story brings you to Jacob and his grandfather. Jacob listens intently to his grandfathers childhood stories about growing up on a Welsh Island, levitating girls, strong men, and monsters. He even has the strange photos to accompany the tall tales! But when Jacob faces a terrible tragedy he begins to wonder, were the stories actually true? Join Jacob as he searches to solve the mystery of his grandfather's childhood and save his new friends along the way! Flitting between the past and present, the impossible and possible will leave your head spinning and your heart glowing. I thoroughly enjoyed the dreamy reality of Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children and you will too!
HPB Staff ReviewThe novel opens with a young man who has recently had tragedy befall his family. This tragedy leads him to explore far away lands in Europe, as well as a place no plane can reach. Along his travels he encounters an almost deserted island and a dilapidated home for children, where a dark family secret is hiding among the rubble. Ransom Riggs is a wonderfully creepy story teller who is perfectly partnered by the real life photographs sprinkled throughout this mystery. Miss Peregrine's Home will have you delightfully addicted, but are you brave enough to turn the page and look at the photograph just beyond the last word?
