Set in an alternate matriarchal 1900's Asia, in a richly imagined world of art deco-inflected steam punk, MONSTRESS tells the story of a teenage girl who is struggling to survive the trauma of war, and who shares a mysterious psychic link with a monster of tremendous power, a connection that will transform them both and make them the target of both human and otherworldly powers.

  • Beautiful artistry coupled with a haunting story...

    Isla G. - 2 years 6 months ago

Monstress by Marjorie Liu and Sana Takeda is an enthralling read coupled with beautifully dark imagery. Liu crafts a story about a young woman who is looking to find out the truth about herself in a world embroiled in a battle of wills between old magic versus new magic. This book has it all, witches, inner demons, struggles for power and an adorable cat sidekick.

  • A Fantasy Unfurled in Layers

    Andrew H. - 3 years 8 months ago

Monstress is a comic series that constantly pops up as recommended when looking for new issues of my favorite runs, so when I got the chance to read this first volume I took it. The thing that grabbed me immediately was the art in this book. Wow. I mean WOW! As a lover of fantasy and intricate artwork, this is some of the best I have seen in a comic. The dark tones of the world are reflected perfectly in the art style. The amount of variety in character design and the feel of the world adds a layer to the story that builds the creepy mystery of it. The story itself follows a teenage girl caught in the middle of a class war of sorts between normal humans and humans with animal-like qualities. The trauma of war is not the only burden she carries however as all events slowly become clear through the course of the book. This is not a series to be missed by fans of other series such as Saga or Locke and Key.

  • The horrors hidden within...

    Jason W. - 8 years 1 month ago

From the moment I unwrapped this gift, the cover filled me with curiosity. Asian art deco blends with art nouveau and then meets up with a little industrial steampunk for an eye-catching design, and that's just the background. This story picks up in the midst of the aftermath of a devastating war between Arcanics, who are human-animal crossbreeds, and the so-called normal humans. Human witches still use the Arcanics that are still being hunted and captured as resources for their magic: maiming, dismembering and killing them in the cruelest fashions. Maika Halfwolf uses their magical greed against them and gets herself caught as a means to sneak into the innermost compound of a higher up witch on a quest for information and vengeance. Dark, violent, passionate, twisted, and so very compelling. A primo gift and I can't wait to find the next volume.
