Overview

Curl up with this cozy mystery perfect for autumn

Featuring his famous literary detective Atticus Pund and Susan Ryeland, hero of the worldwide bestseller Magpie Murders, a brilliantly complex literary thriller with echoes of Agatha Christie from New York Times bestselling author Anthony Horowitz.

Retired publisher Susan Ryeland is living the good life. She is running a small hotel on a Greek island with her long-term boyfriend Andreas. It should be everything she's always wanted. But is it? She's exhausted with the responsibilities of making everything work on an island where nothing ever does, and truth be told she's beginning to miss London.

And then the Trehearnes come to stay. The strange and mysterious story they tell, about an unfortunate murder that took place on the same day and in the same hotel in which their daughter was married--a picturesque inn on the Suffolk coast named Farlingaye Hall--fascinates Susan and piques her editor's instincts.

One of her former writers, the late Alan Conway, author of the fictional Magpie Murders, knew the murder victim--an advertising executive named Frank Parris--and once visited Farlingaye Hall. Conway based the third book in his detective series, Atticus Pund Takes the Cake, on that very crime.

The Trehearne's, daughter, Cecily, read Conway's mystery and believed the book proves that the man convicted of Parris's murder--a Romanian immigrant who was the hotel's handyman--is innocent. When the Trehearnes reveal that Cecily is now missing, Susan knows that she must return to England and find out what really happened.

Brilliantly clever, relentlessly suspenseful, full of twists that will keep readers guessing with each revelation and clue, Moonflower Murders is a deviously dark take on vintage English crime fiction from one of its greatest masterminds, Anthony Horowitz.

Susan Ryland of Magpie Murders returns, enlisted by the Trehearne family to find Cecily Trehearne. Late author Alan Conway is once again to blame, as a book written earlier than Magpie Murders was set in the hotel owned by the family, based loosely on a murder which took place during the wedding of the missing woman. Something in what Cecily reads in Alan Conway's book alerts her to the identity of the real killer, not the man wrongly imprisoned. And then she disappeared. With an offer too good to pass up, Susan sets out to match the written version to reality and find the missing woman before it's too late. The premise is the same as Magpie Murders, a book within a book, and once again each part is so descriptive and fully realized, that I regret ending one segment to return to the other. A real page-turner and one I highly recommend.

If you love Agatha Christie this series is a must. I appreciate that he uses a classic setting for his story that I find to be rather soothing (minus the murder!) and also keeps his writing fairly clean. Like the first, the mystery is presented in the most unique way as it centers around another Atticus Pund novel. If you haven’t picked up the first yet either, reading both in this series gets you FOUR very well written mystery books for the price of two. Ok I sound like a cheesy infomercial, but still bookworms need I say more? #SpringPicks
