HPB Staff ReviewAgatha Christie has influenced the Mystery genre more than any other author, and one of her most popular and memorable novels is being thrust back into the spotlight with Kenneth Branagh's new adaptation. Hercule Poirot, Christie's famous Belgian detective, must solve a brutal murder with an abundance of likely suspects. Murder on the Orient Express starts out as a typical closed-room mystery but culminates in one of the most exciting, unique, and unexpected endings of Poirot's many adventures. Paranoia and a claustrophobic setting set the stage as red herrings and misdirections lead the reader on an unforgettable adventure. Read the book before you see the movie.
HPB Staff ReviewI first read this book several years ago and have pulled it out to re-read once a year ever since. "Murder on the Orient Express" is a classic mystery, with characters isolated on a snowbound train with a freshly murdered corpse. The dead man was not who he said he was, but no one else on the train is either, with one exception. Investigator Hercule Poirot is himself and always himself: eccentric, fussy, and either incredibly vain or really as good as he believes himself to be. Non-spoiler disclosure: he really is that good, especially at understanding why people kill and what drove the guilty to stab a man as he slept. This is a classic tale for a reason. Just like Hercule Poirot, his most famous case is really that good.
HPB Staff ReviewI have loved Agatha Christie books for over 30 years. However, I can "never" figure out "who dun it!" So, in this time of quarantine, I have decided to re-read many of her classics. This one stands out at the top of the list. Even if you have seen the movie, remember, the book is always better! The setting is superbly glamorous, the characters are interesting and mysterious, and the climax, well, it's Hercule Poirot, of course; what more needs to be said!
