The idea of a teenager running off to live in the mountains really appealed to me as a kid, and I still love this book. It's well-researched with lots of interesting wilderness and survival facts woven in. I'd recommend it to anyone looking to bolster a kid's love of nature.
HPB Staff ReviewCraighead George’s books were a huge part of my lifetime and My Side of the Mountain in particular inspired me to learn about raptors and it played a huge part in my ornithology degree. This classic take of a young teen who tries to find himself by living off the land as Thoreau once did gives a great new definition of Transcendentalism.
