Overview

"Pulpy, peppery and sinister, served up in a comic deadpan...This scorpion-tailed little thriller leaves a response, and a sting, you will remember."--NEW YORK TIMES

"The wittiest and most fun murder party you've ever been invited to."--MARIE CLAIRE

WINNER OF THE LA TIMES BOOK PRIZE FOR MYSTERY/THRILLER
FINALIST FOR THE 2019 WOMEN'S PRIZE

A short, darkly funny, hand grenade of a novel about a Nigerian woman whose younger sister has a very inconvenient habit of killing her boyfriends

"Femi makes three, you know. Three and they label you a serial killer."

Korede is bitter. How could she not be? Her sister, Ayoola, is many things: the favorite child, the beautiful one, possibly sociopathic. And now Ayoola's third boyfriend in a row is dead.

Korede's practicality is the sisters' saving grace. She knows the best solutions for cleaning blood, the trunk of her car is big enough for a body, and she keeps Ayoola from posting pictures of her dinner to Instagram when she should be mourning her "missing" boyfriend. Not that she gets any credit.

Korede has long been in love with a kind, handsome doctor at the hospital where she works. She dreams of the day when he will realize that she's exactly what he needs. But when he asks Korede for Ayoola's phone number, she must reckon with what her sister has become and how far she's willing to go to protect her.

Sharp as nails and full of deadpan wit, Oyinkan Braithwaite's deliciously deadly debut is as fun as it is frightening.

  • A Twisted Tale

    Elise K. - 5 years 1 month ago

Our narrator is Korede, a homely nurse who will do anything for her sister, Ayoola, who just happens to be a serial killer. This brutal book has sharp observations about human nature and the relationships between siblings. Ayoola is wicked and sociopathic, and her sister is the same, but in very different ways. It's dark, hard and mean...and I loved it!

  • Quick and fun read

Really easy and fast read. Interesting plot. I enjoyed it. I just wish the story was a bit longer. It seemed to end abruptly.

  • An entertaining read.

I found it amusing. It's not high literature, but it doesn't have to be.

  • Dark and witty

A short novel, a one-sit reading. Witty and dark, very dark. Those who recommended it forgot to mention this part, They said: Oh, it's funny, you'll like it". Yes, it is funny, but not in a slapstick way. It's the words, the tone that make it funny, not the actions. I enjoyed discovering a new place. Laos, unknown to me. And a new author. I wonder's what she's going to write next.

  • Funny and Short Thriller

    Hallie F. - 6 years 1 month ago

This book is a great, quick thriller! I originally read it through my library but decided I liked it so much I needed my own copy, so I ordered it from here. The characters are complex, the situation unreasonable, and the story captivating. It was a quick read that I thoroughly enjoyed. If anyone is looking for a short, satiric thriller, I suggest this! It was easy to get through and funny to read.
