When this book was released, it caused quite the uproar. The portrait of the protagonist and his mindset is eloquently depicted. The crucial event that drives the narrative takes place about a quarter of the way into the story and is one of the most starkly written scenes I've ever encountered in a novel. Highly recommended.
HPB Staff ReviewA compelling story of a Black man who kills a White woman and the downward spiral that results. One of the greatest American novels of all time. #Banned Book
#SummerReading The all-too-realistic portrait of a young black man who WANTS to lead a good, moral life. He tries, but society, on every level won't let him. In the end he just gives up and becomes the stereotype they want him to be. It's a fast-paced read, but so hard to deal with. Be prepared to become emotionally invested in this book.
