As a kid and well into my twenties I hated Westerns. "Lonesome Dove," "The Searchers," and Elmer Kelton helped make me more receptive to the genre. Joe Lansdale is better known for his Hap and Leonard mysteries and his horror novels, but he can tell a heck of a Western story too. This is the story of Nat Love, a real life African American who became known as Deadwood Dick, a cowboy, and gunfighter. Not much is known about his early life, but Lansdale invents a thrilling one in this book. Lansdale is a hell of a storyteller, and his "The Thicket" is one of the best adventure novels I have read over the last few years. "Paradise Sky" is almost that good and I wish it had been even longer, I was sorry to see it end.
