Overview

BOOK ONE IN THE BROKEN EMPIRE TRILOGY

"Prince of Thorns deserves attention as the work of an iconoclast who seems determined to turn that familiar thing, Medievalesque Fantasy Trilogy, entirely on its head."--Locus

When he was nine, he watched as his mother and brother were killed before him. By the time he was thirteen, he was the leader of a band of bloodthirsty thugs. By fifteen, he intends to be king...

It's time for Prince Honorous Jorg Ancrath to return to the castle he turned his back on, to take what's rightfully his. Since the day he hung pinned on the thorns of a briar patch and watched Count Renar's men slaughter his mother and young brother, Jorg has been driven to vent his rage. Life and death are no more than a game to him--and he has nothing left to lose.

But treachery awaits him in his father's castle. Treachery and dark magic. No matter how fierce his will, can one young man conquer enemies with power beyond his imagining?

  • Wicked new classic

Don't let the generic book cover deter you! Yes, I confess to judging a book by its cover before. Go on, throw tomatoes at me. You look at this book and all you see is a) vague blurb about yet another prince with a vengeance and b) equally vague cover. Do yourself a favor and step over this cover into a fascinating character development. Jorg is distastefully cruel, uncaring and petty. But why do we follow him throughout the book inwardly wishing him luck and maybe a redemption, which he does not care for? More importantly, why do his 'brothers' follow a cunning boy of 14? Let him lead you and maybe you'll find out. Trust me on this one.

  • There's no elegance..in death if you spend time in the castle kitchens.

This book will make you question your own morality. When Prince Honorous Jorg Ancrath was eight, he saw his own mother and brother murdered, and he grows up to be worse than the killers. Prince Jorg is somehow both terrible and relatable, ruthless and driven. The story is a bit about trying to regain his throne and take command of his kingdom, but it is also about revenge and the events that can shape an entire lifetime.
