Overview

Everyone's invited...everyone's a suspect...

For fans of Ruth Ware and Tana French, a shivery, atmospheric, page-turning novel of psychological suspense in the tradition of Agatha Christie, in which a group of old college friends are snowed in at a hunting lodge . . . and murder and mayhem ensue.

All of them are friends. One of them is a killer.

During the languid days of the Christmas break, a group of thirtysomething friends from Oxford meet to welcome in the New Year together, a tradition they began as students ten years ago. For this vacation, they've chosen an idyllic and isolated estate in the Scottish Highlands--the perfect place to get away and unwind by themselves.

They arrive on December 30th, just before a historic blizzard seals the lodge off from the outside world.

Two days later, on New Year's Day, one of them is dead.

The trip began innocently enough: admiring the stunning if foreboding scenery, champagne in front of a crackling fire, and reminiscences about the past. But after a decade, the weight of secret resentments has grown too heavy for the group's tenuous nostalgia to bear. Amid the boisterous revelry of New Year's Eve, the cord holding them together snaps.

Now one of them is dead . . . and another of them did it.

Keep your friends close, the old adage goes. But just how close is too close?

  • Quick read but not compelling

Eh, it was a quick read, not a great who-dun-it. Out of perhaps 15 characters, about a handful were “voiced” which narrowed the pool for victim and perpetrator significantly.

  • Fun, Cozy, Engaging Mystery!

Wonderful murder mystery! The first, say, quarter definitely dragged, but once we had established the characters and their backstories, the plot was able to really pick up. This group of friends was just so....ugh, terrible. What a pack of just, messy, messy people. Frenemies with all that money, but no class. They were all written so well, I truly grew to just detest them in all their scaly imperfections. Also, the fact that the murder victim was saved as a surprise right up until the very end was such a pleasant device (even though I suspected who it'd be, it didn't seem to matter so much because we also didn't know the murderer until the end, either) and I'm shocked that the author was able to make it work on the page. Giving a 4.75/5 due to the dragging in the early chapters, and to the third act surprise guest and their whole illicit activity.....I just don't think we needed that whole revelation, it felt like a distraction, or at worst a limping, sad red herring. Altogether super fun to read! #SpringPicks

  • Eerie

    MJ C. - 5 years 8 months ago

A group of frenemies gather at a hunting lodge in Scotland for an annual vacation. The fissures in their relationships become more apparent. The lodge is extremely secluded. The lodge manager and maintenance worker each have a troubled past. A snow storm results in greater isolation. One of the guests is missing and then found dead. This really reminded me of Agatha Christie. The characters were very well written. The layers were peeled back perfectly. I recommend this eerie tale.

#SummerReading Slow beginning, but halfway in I could not stop reading! I wanted to know more!!

  • It’ll keep you guessing!

I enjoyed reading this book so much, I couldn’t put it down! It’s hard for me to find a mystery that I can’t guess the twist but this book kept me in my toes. The back and forth between days and characters was a bit distracting at first but after a few chapters it was easier to follow. I’ve already purchased another Lucy Foley book to read next! #summerreading #mystery
