Overview

In this sequel to Rabbit, Run, John Updike resumes the spiritual quest of his anxious Everyman, Harry "Rabbit" Angstrom. Ten years have passed; the impulsive former athlete has become a paunchy thirty-six-year-old conservative, and Eisenhower's becalmed America has become 1969's lurid turmoil of technology, fantasy, drugs, and violence. Rabbit is abandoned by his family, his home invaded by a runaway and a radical, his past reduced to a ruined inner landscape; still he clings to semblances of decency and responsibility, and yearns to belong and to believe.

I somewhat reluctantly finished Rabbit, Run after both my father and brother recommended it, but by the end I knew I would not be stopping this series. Rabbit Redux is the perfect springtime read, especially for those who are nostalgic at heart. Updike expertly interweaves his characters and plot events with the happenings of the year in which the book is set. Dramatic, funny, and always thought-provoking, the great detail with which Updike delves into Rabbit’s life will make you ponder about the mysteries of human nature. I highly recommend this book, along with the others in the Rabbit series. Wonderful reads.
