Overview

Winner of the Nebula Award for Best Novel - Discover the novel that launched one of science fiction's most beloved, acclaimed, and awarded trilogies: Kim Stanley Robinson's masterly near-future chronicle of interplanetary colonization.

"A staggering book . . . the best novel on the colonization of Mars that has ever been written."--Arthur C. Clarke

For centuries, the barren, desolate landscape of the red planet has beckoned to humankind. Now a group of one hundred colonists begins a mission whose ultimate goal is to transform Mars into a more Earthlike planet. They will place giant satellite mirrors in Martian orbit to reflect light onto its surface. Black dust sprinkled on the polar caps will capture warmth and melt the ice. And massive tunnels drilled into the mantle will create stupendous vents of hot gases. But despite these ambitious goals, there are some who would fight to the death to prevent Mars from ever being changed.

  • A well presented and believable depiction of the future colonization of Mars.

    Klarissa B. - 7 years 3 months ago

This first installment of the Mars Trilogy presents us with the landing of the first one-hundred colonists on Mars, and of the years following as they work to give humanity a permanent foothold on the red planet. Balancing corporate interest with political maneuvering, these brave men and women make incredible breakthroughs in their respective scientific fields and make great leaps in the effort to turn the red planet, green and blue.

  • Those first tenuous steps beyond our own world, to the red one just next door, and beyond...

    Victor G. - 8 years 3 months ago

The first installment in the Mars Trilogy by Kim Stanley Robinson: Red Mars follows the journey of the 1st one-hundred settlers of Mars from their journey through space up through the beginning of the settlement and terraforming era. Rife with interpersonal struggles and political debate, Red Mars is one of those remarkable and poignant stories that never loses its social relevance. It also is one of the shining examples of well-written sci-fi which seems well researched and expands upon the principles of existing and well-understood sciences and technologies. I am more than excited to read on to the next installments of Green Mars and Blue Mars.
