Overview

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - Pierce Brown's relentlessly entertaining debut channels the excitement of The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins and Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card.

"Ender, Katniss, and now Darrow."--Scott Sigler

NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY, BUZZFEED, AND SHELF AWARENESS

"I live for the dream that my children will be born free," she says. "That they will be what they like. That they will own the land their father gave them."
"I live for you," I say sadly.
Eo kisses my cheek. "Then you must live for more."

Darrow is a Red, a member of the lowest caste in the color-coded society of the future. Like his fellow Reds, he works all day, believing that he and his people are making the surface of Mars livable for future generations. Yet he toils willingly, trusting that his blood and sweat will one day result in a better world for his children.

But Darrow and his kind have been betrayed. Soon he discovers that humanity reached the surface generations ago. Vast cities and lush wilds spread across the planet. Darrow--and Reds like him--are nothing more than slaves to a decadent ruling class.

Inspired by a longing for justice, and driven by the memory of lost love, Darrow sacrifices everything to infiltrate the legendary Institute, a proving ground for the dominant Gold caste, where the next generation of humanity's overlords struggle for power. He will be forced to compete for his life and the very future of civilization against the best and most brutal of Society's ruling class. There, he will stop at nothing to bring down his enemies . . . even if it means he has to become one of them to do so.

I was really attracted by the bright red wings on the cover when “Red Rising” first came into my local library but I opened it and discovered a literary ticket to Mars, I could not put it down. Darrow is a character that is an Everyman for those who needed a hero in a dystopian Martian system that readily borrows its structure from the ancient Romans. Every supporting character is fully fleshed out after coming into contact with Darrow. I especially liked the character of Sevro. The Red Rising series is a series that I read & reread every year. It’s the Ender’s Game of the 21st century. If you have to read one sci-fi book this year, this is it. #SpringPicks

Forget the Hunger Games and Maze Runner, Red Rising tears you through an incredible world and a gripping story. I could not put this book down! As soon as I picked it up I was hooked and I counted down the minutes to lunch so I could read it again. Red Rising is the first true sci-fi novel I've read and I am in love! All of the characters, Darrow, Mustang, Cassius, Sevro are just fantastic and keep you glued to every page. The plot was fascinating and Darrow's voice was so fluid and so unique, it kept me rooting for him every step of the way! I bought the next two books within days of finishing the first and devoured them just as fast. I'm officially a "Howler" for life!!

I initially had very mixed feelings about this book. It was an interesting concept, but much of the story felt rushed for convenience sake. However, I decided to continue on with the series and I'm so glad that I did! I thought the second and third book were ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! Please please read this series! #SummerReading

If you're looking for the next page-turning dystopian novel with a richly imagined world, great characters, and political intrigue, this is it. The novel never settles on making things black and white (yes that's a bit of color-stratified humor there) and made me want to stay up all night reading it.
