Overview

Published one hundred years after Robert Motherwell's birth. Motherwell (1915-1991) was an abstract expressionist and one of the founding artists of the New York School of Abstract Expressionism. Abstract expressionism emerged after WWII, and was a rebellious art movement. It combined the style of its predecessor, Surrealism, with spontaneous subconcious creation. Motherwell was a contemporary of Mark Rothko, Jackson Pollock, and Willem de Kooning. Alongside his influential painting, Motherwell was also an accomplished collagist, writer, theorist, and teacher. He was an encouraging ally of emerging artists. This edition serves as a one volume collection of Motherwell's life and work; each chapter, while not in chronological order, covers a portion of Motherwell's life. Slight creasing and bending on dust jacket edges. Back cover of dust jacket has slight scuffing. There's a small tear on the back cover of dust jacket, bottom left corner.
