Anyone who considers history a dry subject should absolutely pick up this book. Rubicon tells the story of the final years of the Roman Republic in an incredibly compelling way; with a novelist's eye for the intriguing and a storyteller's style, Holland brings the dead to life and reveals a world very much like our own, complete with corrupt oligarchs, military strongmen, and the tragedy of a Republic brought low by seeds of its own sewing. The pace is fast; the stakes are high, and - best of all - the struggles are all very real. This book reads like an epic novel, educates like an excellent seminar, and is all around an utter joy to read.
