The first title in John Sandford's signature series only hints at the growth ahead - not only in the author but in Minneapolis cop Lucas Davenport. If you start in the middle (Secret Prey for me) and then bounce back to the beginning, you find a grimmer protagonist and an arguably "wordier" writing style. But no matter if Sandford's style hews towards Thomas Harris (early-Sandford) or Elmore Leonard (later-Sandford) your need for the best crime entertainment available gets met.
HPB Staff ReviewThis gets five stars because I am a mega police procedurals fan, started with Joseph Waumbaugh. The old private eye stories were successful because not being police, the PI’s could go by their own rules. Except for Lucas Davenport here in the first of John Sandford’s series Prey novels. A bit dated today, at its release this was a timely take on a policeman who encounters an evil that can’t be dealt with by conventional means. Davenport is tough, inventive ruthless and unforgiving when perhaps that is the only way to be. He is also very intelligent ( which makes him rich later in the series). He is a rugged lady’s man who loves books and role playing games.Sandford here also crafts an unforgettable monster for Davenport to pursue.Game on!#SpringPicks
