Game of Thrones fans will love the New York Times bestselling Abhorsen series. Sabriel, the first installment in the trilogy, launched critically acclaimed author Garth Nix onto the fantasy scene as a rising star.
Since childhood, Sabriel has lived outside the walls of the Old Kingdom, away from the power of Free Magic, and away from the Dead who refuse to stay dead. But now her father, the Abhorson, is missing, and Sabriel must cross into that world to find him. With Mogget, whose feline form hides a powerful, perhaps malevolent spirit, and Touchstone, a young Charter Mage, Sabriel travels deep into the Old Kingdom. There she confronts an evil that threatens much more than her life and comes face-to-face with her own hidden destiny. . . .

This book is perfect for older teens and the mature young adult who love just a dab of horror in a fabulously written fantasy novel. This book deals with necromancy in such a tasteful way. Sabriel's job is to keep dead things where they belong and "The Other Side" is like a river where there are nine Gates. The further along you go into death, the harder it is to come back. Yet, somehow, a nasty being is making its way back from the farthest reaches of the last gate before having made its way to the final resting place. Sabriel must use her necromancy bells with the help of her talking white cat, Mogget, and her unlikely companion (and love interest), Touchstone, to keep the dead things dead. This is a book that I have read over and over and never tire of. It is full of great fantasy with magic, lost princes, and tamed evil beings made into pets. You will not be disappointed.
HPB Staff ReviewWhen Sabriel receives an urgent message from her father calling her back from her safe school life over the Wall, she must cross over to a world very different than what she knows. She journeys to a half remembered culture with a dangerous charter magic taught to her by people who barely believed in it's source. For magic does travel far past the Wall and death itself stalks her steps as she follows the path of her father. It was his task, and now her own, to put the dead back where they belong. Like the memory of a dream from childhood, Garth Nix's Sabriel is a wonderful mix of classic fairy tale and chilling horror.
HPB Staff ReviewIn a dark world where magic and technology live unhappily side by side, Sabriel is called to take her father's place and lay the dead to rest. The Old Kingdom has been without a ruler for almost 200 years, the royal family murdered in a dark ritual to open the way back for the dead. Now Sabriel must travel from the safety of modern Ancelstierre, across the Wall, and through the dangerous land that the Old Kingdom has become in order to fight for those who still live there. It's an incredible imagining of necromancy and the undead, with a world half Dark Ages and half World War II. There are plenty heart-in-your-throat moments, and a heroine to cheer for. Unlike many lay the undead to rest' heroines, there is never a moral ambiguity with this young woman. She's one of the good guys, plain and simple.
HPB Staff Review'Sabriel' was one of those accidental finds for me that absolutely paid off. It is the story of a young girl living in the nonmagical realm of Ancelstierre, just outside of the wall separating them from the magic of the Old Kingdom. Her father is the Abhorsen, a necromancer tasked with keeping the Dead from rising out of death. But when he goes missing, Sabriel must face her destiny as the next Abhorsen, traveling into the magical kingdom and even into death to find her father and defeat the evil forces trapping him there. The world of the story is fully realized and complex, but the story is really driven forward by the strong characters. I become very attached to Sabriel, the unforgettable hero of the story. Young Adult fiction is all about strong female leads right now, but so many of them are flat, one-dimensional. Sabriel is strong and courageous, even daring sometimes. But she is also kind, loyal, vulnerable. If you liked Katniss and Hermione, you'll love Sabriel. This book is engrossing for both teens and adults, lovers of magical realism and high fantasy, even dinosaurs will love this book. Do you have a pulse? Then go read this book before it's too late!
