Overview

Ben Mears has returned to Jerusalem's Lot in hopes that exploring the history of the Marsten House, an old mansion long the subject of rumor and speculation, will help him cast out his personal devils and provide inspiration for his new book. But when two young boys venture into the woods, and only one returns alive, Mears begins to realize that something sinister is at work--in fact, his hometown is under siege from forces of darkness far beyond his imagination. And only he, with a small group of allies, can hope to contain the evil that is growing within the borders of this small New England town.

With this, his second novel, Stephen King established himself as an indisputable master of American horror, able to transform the old conceits of the genre into something fresh and all the more frightening for taking place in a familiar, idyllic locale.

  • Salem's Lot rocks.

Great characters and great story. I've read over 20 Stephen King books and this is one of my favorites.

  • Not your ordinary vampires

I have never been a huge fan of Stephen King. Granted, I've only ever read a few of his books, but this one is definitely my favorite. I will watch or read just about anything as long as vampires are involved, and the vampires in this book are a different breed altogether. Long before King introduces the main villain, we are introduced to members of the town. The way this book allows you to make up your mind is very refreshing; it doesn't force you to feel things, good or bad. Also, it is not overly grotesque or violent. Most of the violence is handled "off screen", so you're left to use your imagination. Reading the last 100 pages was delightfully nerve-wracking. I wanted to see the final showdown, but I didn't want the book to end.
