Overview

  • An Elegant, Believable Fantasy

    If you enjoyed any of Jane Austen's novels or are a fan of a good period piece, try out this lovely riff on magic and historical fiction. Mary Robinette Kowal--known for her well-crafted prose and talent as an audiobook narrator--deftly spins a Regency story of love, social expectation and the fantastic in a version of England where accomplished young ladies learn to weave magic--Glamour--to ornament their lives. I've re-read "Pride and Prejudice" a dozen times and Kowal tells a new, fresh story that was wholly her own while being clearly inspired by one of my go-to favorites. I'm always thrilled to recommend this delicate and empowering novel. If you enjoy it, there are more books in the series, each delving more deeply into a world where it is people, not magic, who are capable of changing themselves and their lives.
