Requiem is Radd
Ben T. - 3 years 3 months agoEven at the time of its release, Marvel's 2008 graphic novel, Silver Surfer: Requiem, went unappreciated, largely due to the public's disinterest of its titular character. Typical fan malaise aside, an awful impression lingered after 20th Century Fox's embarrassing 2007 film, Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. J. Michael Straczynski, perhaps the most versatile and ingenious modern graphic novel writer (who penned, amongst other things, Marvel Civil War, a story that will be hitting the big screen on May 6th in this year's Captain America: Civil War), was called in to do what he has done so many times before and since: take a character whose mythos has been run into the ground and resurrect former glory. With stunning visuals by illustrator Esad Ribic, the two weave a universe-spanning adventure in which the Silver Surfer (Norrin Radd) faces his impending and unavoidable mortality. The Silver Surfer's origins trace back to a time when Galactus, Devourer of Worlds, intended to consume Norrin Radd's home planet. In a plea for his planet to be spared, Radd pledged to become a herald for Galactus, seeking out other planets to be consumed. Galactus granted Radd a portion of the Power Cosmic and transformed him into the Silver Surfer. The Surfer would eventually turn on Galactus and begin searching for his own path, though never regaining the life he once had. Requiem delves into the final two weeks of the Silver Surfer's life, involving great grief, compassion, and exploration, both internal and external. Appearances are made by the Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, and several other familiar Marvel heroes, all friends of the Surfer. Every character reacts differently, many seeming to emotionally suffer more than the Silver Surfer, himself. No knowledge of comic book lore is required for Requiem's story. All the reader needs is emotional preparation for the intensely personal story; the Surfer's fate mimics that of a terminal cancer patient. His graceful acceptance is laced with a quiet emotional turbulence and a need for closure on the many heartbreaking loose ends left from his galactic journeys. Ultimately, Requiem is a universal story of choosing to face mortality without succumbing to fear. The Silver Surfer seeks solace in his friends but bears the burden of facing his own demise alone. While it's easy to dismiss a graphic novel if it's not your regular fare, Silver Surfer: Requiem surpasses all others and is well worth anyone's time. The story expertly addresses the fate that awaits all living things and shows that we all have a choice in how we meet it.
