I loved this book and it opened me up to another favorite author. After reading this book I went on to read every other Ann Patchett book I could get my hands on and loved them all. The book has so many different facets; mystery, confusion, loss, strength, joy, sorrow, complexities of people and the mazes that they contain within themselves, that it is fascinating to the last page.
HPB Staff ReviewThe time had come to read Ann Patchett—her name kept popping up. I selected State of Wonder because the subject matter was in my bailiwick—science and scientists. Patchett did not disappoint. In a sometimes circuitous and seemingly prolonged route of plot from Minnesota to Manaus, and deep into Amazonia, a story that does in the end satisfy, the real journey is in Patchett’s exploration of complex characters, the protagonist and her perceived nemesis. I’ll definitely be reading more by Patchett.
