A true first of Twain's timeless classic, predating the American release of the book by two months. Ads at rear dated October 1884. In red boards with gilt embossed titles on the spine and front board and black embosseed decorations. Considerable rubbing and some fraying to the head and foot of the spine and the corners of the boards. Former owner's bookplate to front free endpaper. Rear hinge split. Minor soiling to the boards. A few frayed spots to the spine. Former own'er's pencil drawings on half-title. Tears in the front tissue guard.
