I'm a huge Jim Butcher fan and he knocks another out of the park with this new series. Completely different setting than his Dresden Files and Codex Alera, this time the main character Captain Grimm of the merchant airship Predator, set sail on an exciting journey to save the kingdom of Spire Albion from the opposing Spire Aurora. Loveable characters, exciting action pulsing through each page, and flying ships!
HPB Staff ReviewAs a fan of both Jim Butcher and the Steampunk genre, I was very excited to get my hands on this book. From the first few pages, it sucked me into the very well-planned plot lines and interesting characters. In a new world that needs a lot of explaining for the reader to feel immersed, I felt like the exposition never seemed to dull the actual story. Although you have some of the usual tropes you find in fantasy stories, The Aeronauts Windlass is definitely in a class of its own and left me pining for the next book in the series. If you are looking for a smart and exciting new series, I would say this is the book for you!
HPB Staff ReviewFuturistic dystopian steampunk. What more needs to be said? Jim Butcher does a great job of creating a very unique-feeling and interesting world that makes you want to dive deeper. With intriguing and engaging characters and action reminiscent of O'Brian or Forester, this is quite a fun read.
HPB Staff ReviewIf you like two of these three things, you will probably like this book. Jim Butcher, best known for his Dresden Files series, tries his hand at the steampunk genre, and he deftly weaves magic and technology together with a system that makes a lot of sense; he even gives a logical reason for characters to wear goggles, and as everyone knows, it ain't steampunk without goggles. Then throw in the talking cats who talk exactly like you think cats would talk, and you've got yourself a story. It may sound cheesy, but it was a lot of fun, action packed, with some serious world building and cool, original ideas thrown in.
HPB Staff ReviewI was introduced to Jim Butcher's books with the Dresden Files series, and when I discovered that he not only did urban fantasy but he dabbed in the steampunk genre I was intrigued, how would the humor and chronicle-like narration I was used to would translate? Thankfully I was pleasantly surprised with the new series, it is very distinguishable in both theme and tone, but still has that adventure calling I love and relatable characters. Very recommended reading and a great introduction to this series.
