Turned into a film by Roman Polanski starring Johnny Depp called "The Ninth Gate," the book is much more of a twisted whirlwind. The movie only captures the plotline dealing with the occult and Satanism surrounding the Book of the Nine Gates, a rare collectible edition written by a man supposedly in league with the devil. The other plotline revolves around a mysterious manuscript that was left out of the original book "The Three Musketeers" by Alexandre Dumas. Both the manuscript and the other rare occult edition go missing and keep exchanging hands in weird roundabout ways that are all related (but you don't find out how until the conclusion). It's a mixture of horror and mystery that really works well combined with Perez-Reverte's writing style. Although originally published in Spanish as "El Club Dumas," the English translation is just as intriguing and lyrical. A must-read for suspense fans!
HPB Staff ReviewThe Club Dumas is a 1993 novel written by Arturo Perez-Reverte. The novel follows Lucas Corso, an antique book dealer who sets out to authenticate a lost chapter of The Three Musketeers by Alexandre Dumas. He soon finds himself drawn into a quest to authenticate another manuscript, Of the Nine Doors of the Kingdom of Shadows, a book used for summoning the Devil. Aiding Corso in his search is a mysterious girl who calls herself Irene Adler, the famous Arthur Conan Doyle character who outsmarts the great Sherlock Holmes. The Doyle reference is one of many in The Club Dumas. Among those you'll find include Paradise Lost, Watership Down, Moby-Dick, and a long list of other great literary classics. For that reason, The Club Dumas is not only a fascinating blend of mystery and supernatural but a treat for anyone who enjoys classic literature.
