This book is a collection of Victorian detective stories from a great assortment of authors. I have read Michael Sims' other book 'Phantom Coach: A Connoisseur's Collection of Victorian Ghost Stories' and greatly enjoyed that as well. The stories range from very well known tales (like Doyle's "Science of Deduction") to lesser-known (Mary Fortune's "The Dead Witness; or, The Bush Waterhole"). What I greatly appreciate about Sims' collection of stories is his introduction to each author at the beginning of every story. You are provided a page and a half or so of the author's historical background and legacy while usually mentioning something of the story you are about to read. Though the reader can simply skip over these short introductions, I find I appreciated the stories more after reading them.
