Overview

In The Emperor's Blades by Brian Staveley, the emperor of Annur is dead, slain by enemies unknown. His daughter and two sons, scattered across the world, do what they must to stay alive and unmask the assassins. But each of them also has a life-path on which their father set them, destinies entangled with both ancient enemies and inscrutable gods.

Kaden, the heir to the Unhewn Throne, has spent eight years sequestered in a remote mountain monastery, learning the enigmatic discipline of monks devoted to the Blank God. Their rituals hold the key to an ancient power he must master before it's too late.

An ocean away, Valyn endures the brutal training of the Kettral, elite soldiers who fly into battle on gigantic black hawks. But before he can set out to save Kaden, Valyn must survive one horrific final test.

At the heart of the empire, Minister Adare, elevated to her station by one of the emperor's final acts, is determined to prove herself to her people. But Adare also believes she knows who murdered her father, and she will stop at nothing--and risk everything--to see that justice is meted out.

  • Growing up in three different worlds.

The Emperor's Blades by Brian Staveley is the first book in the Chronicles of the Unhewn Throne trilogy and is the first novel from the author. What an awesome new voice in fantasy! As a long time fantasy reader, I rarely find myself diving into something with such gusto, but this book grabbed me right away. The book is focused on the three children of the emperor of Annur, the largest empire in the world, and each is sent at a young age to lead a very different life to prepare them for the future. Adare, the oldest sibling, stays in the palace with her father to learn the ways of economics and trade. Kaden, the middle son, is sent to a far-flung monastery high in the mountains. He is training to be the heir to the throne not by studying politics, but by training himself to be free of emotion. Valyn, the youngest son (and my hands down favorite), is sent to train for an elite group of soldiers called the Kettral. Get this; they ride on the talons of massive Ravens, yeah it is as cool as it sounds. Watching these three coming of age stories from the eyes of all the very different people is a treat, and also fills a space for each kind of fantasy reader. It gives you court play, world building, and philosophy, and combat in bite sized pieces throughout the novel. There are a lot of really original ideas at play here and make for a great reading experience. The way Staveley weaves his plot throughout this trilogy is truly impressive.
