The monumental Hugo and Nebula award winning SF classic-- Featuring a new introduction by John Scalzi
The Earth's leaders have drawn a line in the interstellar sand--despite the fact that the fierce alien enemy they would oppose is inscrutable, unconquerable, and very far away. A reluctant conscript drafted into an elite Military unit, Private William Mandella has been propelled through space and time to fight in the distant thousand-year conflict; to perform his duties and do whatever it takes to survive the ordeal and return home. But "home" may be even more terrifying than battle, because, thanks to the time dilation caused by space travel, Mandella is aging months while the Earth he left behind is aging centuries...

Using science fiction to explore his views on duty, service, and the futility of war, Viet Nam vet Joe Haldeman's the Forever War follows one reluctant soldier through humanity's first encounters and conflict with an alien civilization. Thrilling. Poignant. Heartbreaking. Terrifying. Frustrating. Darkly comic. Widely recognized as the best science fiction war novel ever written.
HPB Staff ReviewJoe Haldeman's The Forever War goes beyond depicting a gritty and unforgiving space war; it puts you in the head of a man, a soldier, torn between worlds and time. It's ambitious and dedicated and not too long. In many ways, it feels like two different novels - maybe three. Regular people, who love and hate and get bored, thrown into the unknown and the deadly. One of, it not the best, science fiction work I've ever read. What happens when the world moves on without you?
HPB Staff ReviewI picked up The Forever War during the middle of the quarantine (curbside) and just recently finished it. Haldeman is a superb writer. Sure, this book takes place on an alternate Earth where we battle strange horseshoe aliens, but it is extremely believable. What the draftees encounter in their war serves as a truly effective parallel to Vietnam, and provides a sense of closeness and relatability for those of us young folks who are temporally removed from those events. Great book. Makes me want to re-read Starship Troopers just so I can compare them. Definitely in my top three military sci-fi books. I absolutely recommend it! #SummerReading
