Overview

The Four Winds, by #1 New York Times bestselling author Kristin Hannah, is an epic novel of love and heroism and hope, set against the backdrop of one of America's most defining eras--the Great Depression.

If I close my eyes, I can still taste the dust...

Texas, 1934. Millions are out of work and a drought has broken the Great Plains. Farmers are fighting to keep their land and their livelihoods. The crops are failing, the water is drying up, and dust threatens to bury them all.

In this uncertain and dangerous time, Elsa Martinelli--like so many of her neighbors--must make an agonizing choice: fight for the land she loves or go west, to California, in search of a better life. The Four Winds is an indelible portrait of America and the American Dream, as seen through the eyes of one indomitable woman who will discover the best in herself in the worst of times.

I know the area in the Great Plains where this story begins. Dalhart is in the TX panhandle; the XIT ranch is still there. They still have dust storms (often referred to as a “haboob” by those who experienced such storms in the Middle East). The poverty described is obscene. My parents lived through those years, but were lucky enough not to be in the Dust Bowl. My dad & his brothers stole coal from the rail yard to heat their home. They missed school for 6 mos because they had no shoes (not ok in the North). My grandmother dragged my grandfather down to the welfare office and kept the family from starving. Shoes.

Great book! Sad time in American history. I’m sure there are so many unsung heroes.
