Adunni is a fourteen year old girl from a poor, rural community in Nigeria who longs for an education to give her a voice. She wants to be a teacher, a person with a "louding" voice as she calls it. Her poor father, however, removes her from school and sells her in marriage to a much older man, and later she becomes a domestic servant to an abusive lady. Adunni's journey is heartbreaking, yet the determination of this young girl to find her voice will stay with you long after you finish reading this amazing debut novel from Abi Dare.
HPB Staff ReviewLoved the writing and delivery of this book, true to the voice of a young girl from Nigeria. Heart breaking reality for young women growing up in outlying villages being “sold” for a bride-price to keep food on the table and roof over her family’s heads. The river of hope and perseverance that this 14 year old possesses to reach her goal of being educated and sharing her knowledge is humbling to a reader from a first world country. This book shows how the world is still so very broken and how in places like Nigeria the wealthy get wealthier and the masses suffer, most of all the women and girls. Worth a read, also enjoyed the Nigerian Facts at the beginning of most chapters.
Such an inspiring story! I loved it right from the start. This book is an awesome reminder that you can overcome obstacles and chase after your dreams! #RequiredReading
I enjoyed this book. Adunni did not give up despite all she went through. She endured a lot in her 14 years of life. All she wanted was a louding voice, to be heard, to be valued, to be worthy.
