  • It's A Great Day to Fight God

    Kat R. - 1 year 7 months ago

In the guise of a children's adventure, this bookstore staple hides more than its minimalist cover belies. Pick your fighter: Lyra, a near feral girl under the wing of learned clergymen and her shape-shifting daemon, Roger, her stolen best friend with a harrowing choice to make, or Will, a preteen murderer with a knife sharper than reality. Watch as they discover a plot of murder, subterfuge and heresy of the highest order and make the decisions that will shape all of reality around them; deciding whether it's better to live in peace or be free. Will they kill God? Who even knows?

  • Adventurous, inquisitive kids with brains, by an author who doesn't dumb them down.

    Sandi S. - 5 years 3 months ago

The book I first got was the entire trilogy in one book with this title. Being a young girl at the time, I was enchanted by a girl protagonist. Intrigue and adventure for teens, but depth, controversy and thought provoking themes within it for adult readers. The Golden Compass Trilogy has a forever spot on my shelves. I re-read it frequently. I recommend the trilogy for young readers who can digest Harry Potter and for all ages above, including adults with imagination who like a great story with some fantastical ideas.

  • Still holds up after all these years

This was a pretty transformative book for me as a kid. I recently re-read the entire series to have it fresh in my mind for the new books and it was just as amazing as I remembered it. I would definitely recommend everyone to try reading the His Dark Materials trilogy. #BannedBook

  • A favorite read, like in top 5

    Crystal R. - 6 years 2 months ago

Loved this book. Enough that I own it and the others in the series. Could be read with your kids. This book is wonderdully written following Lyra on her journey to find her friend Roger but there's so much more than that. She dicovers who her parents are and her own beginnings and starts to find the role that she will play in changing not only her world but others as well.
