Sixteen-year-old Starr Carter moves between two worlds: the poor neighborhood where she lives and the fancy suburban prep school she attends. The uneasy balance between these worlds is shattered when Starr witnesses the fatal shooting of her childhood best friend Khalil at the hands of a police officer. Khalil was unarmed.
Soon afterward, his death is a national headline. Some are calling him a thug, maybe even a drug dealer and a gangbanger. Protesters are taking to the streets in Khalil's name. Some cops and the local drug lord try to intimidate Starr and her family. What everyone wants to know is: what really went down that night? And the only person alive who can answer that is Starr.
But what Starr does--or does not--say could upend her community. It could also endanger her life.
And don't miss On the Come Up, Angie Thomas's powerful follow-up to The Hate U Give.

This book has some valuable insight into the struggle of a young girl to bridge her everyday life in the ghetto with her attendance and relationships at an elite prep school. It also details the journey that she took to move from being a shy girl to one who used her voice as an advocate for social justice. The book uses strong language and situations to make its points, so parents and teachers should be ready to offer counsel to children and students who may not have had or encountered such experiences.
A powerful, heartbreaking story that needed to be told. #SpringPicks
This book was written in 2017 and I think Angie Thomas was writing this book to bring awareness and justice for the black community. I read this book in 2020 and unfortunately this is still relatable. I'd recommend this book to anyone that doesn't see the importance of the Black Lives Matter movement. The main character is Starr, as the reader you witness how her two identities collide after a friend's death. #Bannedbook
What I liked about this book was it open up my eyes and made me understand that what blacks has to go through in the United States of America and why they do black lives matter. If you hadn't read this book yet you definitely need to because it will get you to thinking about how you should treat people no matter the color of their skin!! #BannedBook
This book was a page turner. Starr's character is amazing. This book displays police brutality and social injustice which is constantly happening in our country today. #bannedbook
