Overview

A great modern classic and the prelude to The Lord of the Rings. Bilbo Baggins is a hobbit who enjoys a comfortable, unambitious life, rarely traveling any farther than his pantry or cellar. But his contentment is disturbed when the wizard Gandalf and a company of dwarves arrive on his doorstep one day to whisk him away on an adventure. They have launched a plot to raid the treasure hoard guarded by Smaug the Magnificent, a large and very dangerous dragon. Bilbo reluctantly joins their quest, unaware that on his journey to the Lonely Mountain he will encounter both a magic ring and a frightening creature known as Gollum.

"A glorious account of a magnificent adventure, filled with suspense and seasoned with a quiet humor that is irresistible . . . All those, young or old, who love a fine adventurous tale, beautifully told, will take The Hobbit to their hearts." - New York Times Book Review

  • A children's book for all ages

    Kat R. - 2 years 5 months ago

The Hobbit is a classic tale of adventure and discovering one's self, set in the fabulous multi-dimensional world of Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. Bilbo is our long-suffering protagonist that just can't seem to help falling in with a ragtag group of dwarves searching for their lost homeland. A complex set of characters brings the world to life in a adventure worthy of any age.

  • In Tolkien We Trust

The hobbit is a prime example of how Tolkien can paint an image in your mind. I wasn’t a big reader until I reached my 20’s and this is the book that launched me into this hobby. You can’t truly feel the movies unless you’ve indulged in this book. #bannedbook

  • One of My Favorite Books!

    Shane P. - 6 years ago

One of my favorite books is the Hobbit by J.R.R Tolkien. My favorite character was Smaug. I really liked that Tolkien gave him a personality even though he is a creature. Tolkien also does this with the spiders and trolls. Another favorite part of the story for me is the goblins in the caves, and Gollum playing a game of riddles with Bilbo. I also enjoyed the Mirkwood scene and Bilbo's transformation into the true hero of the story. I wish he would have focused on some of the other twelve dwarves and developing those characters more. I would have enjoyed more details of the battle scene, but Tolkien keeps it brief and that does make it more appropriate for children I suppose. It is an awesome book to read. I definitely recommend for everyone, kids and adults. #summerreading
