"I want to be like the waves on the sea, like the clouds in the wind, but I'm me. One day I'll jump Out of my skin. I'll shake the sky like a hundred violins." - Sandra Cisneros, "The House on Mango Street" The House on Mango Street has become a classic for a reason. In a series of vividly described vignettes, Sandra Cisneros details the story of Esperanza Cordero, a 12-year-old Chicana growing up in the Hispanic quarter of Chicago. It is inspired not only by Cisneros’s own experiences but also by the experiences she witnessed and heard from her students as she taught. This realness is clear in the book as Cisneros creates accessible conversation surrounding themes of social class, race, sexuality, gender, and identity. Not quite poetry, not quite a short story, Cisneros’s let’s us see the world through a young girl’s eyes to better see the societal pressures and how they deteriorate the ability to freely express oneself. All people of all backgrounds should read “The House on Mango Street”. however, because it deals with questions surrounding teen pregnancy, child abuse, and sexual assault, it could be valuable to read it alongside students younger than high school. Although these depictions are not graphic, they can (and should) prompt readers to ask questions and it could be a help to step through these passages with younger readers. #SummerReading
Re-reading a few books, especially books that are written by people of color that portray people of color. This is a book that is succinct but so beautifully written. There's a book list where books are paired with Albums. This book was paired with Solange's "A Seat At The Table". So if you like that album, you will probably enjoy this book. If you don't like the album you will still probably enjoy this book. This book shares stories and point of views that we normally don't see. This is needed in literature. If you are a Person of Color, you will feel heard and seen. If you aren't a Person of Color you will be able to easily digest and get an introduction into life of the other.
