I was unsure of where to start with N. K. Jemisin's novels. I decided to start with her debut. The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms is a unique read with Jemisin jumping from past to present in a beautifully lyrical voice. The world was complex and many different characters and vocabulary were introduced in this first novel. It was helpful that she provided a glossary of characters and terms towards the back of the book, but you could quickly catch on to the words and characters. I enjoyed this book and am looking forward to reading more of Jemisin's works.
HPB Staff ReviewA young outcast tries to find her place at the capital city in the sky (literally called Sky, as it is a palace built into the branches of an enormous tree). There are gods, godlings, demons, royals, servants and just plain normal folks all attempting to navigate the court politics and not instigate another catastrophic war. A unique and compelling story that I absolutely could not put down and luckily for those of you who decide to pick this book up, there are two more books in the series (and they are both fantastic as well). I could not have predicted the outcome of any given chapter, let alone the finale to the trilogy. I highly recommend this series to any who love world-building fantasy.
