Overview

This rags-to-riches Cinderella story with deadly stakes, thrilling twists, and unsolved mysteries is perfect for fans of One of Us is Lying and Knives Out.

Avery Grambs has a plan for a better future: survive high school, win a scholarship, and get out. But her fortunes change in an instant when billionaire Tobias Hawthorne dies and leaves Avery virtually his entire fortune. The catch? Avery has no idea why -- or even who Tobias Hawthorne is.

To receive her inheritance, Avery must move into sprawling, secret passage-filled Hawthorne House, where every room bears the old man's touch -- and his love of puzzles, riddles, and codes. Unfortunately for Avery, Hawthorne House is also occupied by the family that Tobias Hawthorne just dispossessed. This includes the four Hawthorne grandsons: dangerous, magnetic, brilliant boys who grew up with every expectation that one day, they would inherit billions. Heir apparent Grayson Hawthorne is convinced that Avery must be a con-woman, and he's determined to take her down. His brother, Jameson, views her as their grandfather's last hurrah: a twisted riddle, a puzzle to be solved. Caught in a world of wealth and privilege, with danger around every turn, Avery will have to play the game herself just to survive.

I loved the is book. I lov d literally everything about it. It had adventure, romance, and mystery all in one. I heard they were making it into a movie and will definitely be there judging harshly because the book was amazing. I would recommend this to anyone who loves mystery and romance and adventure. "He left you the fortune Avery, and all he left us is you." I had seen review upon review, raving about how great this book and not gonna lie, I was a little worried that it wouldn't meet up to my expectations. But it did!! When people said that it's like Knives Out, they definitely weren't wrong. From the first 2 chapters, you can already see the similarities between them. But as the book goes on, you can see that Avery is her own person and this is her story, whether or not she was expecting it to be. Aside from learning about Avery, there is also the 4 Hawthorne brothers to deal with. We got Nash the certified country boy with a motorcycle, Grayson the smart, witty, hard to get along with one, Jameson the flirt who speaks in riddles, and Xander the robot building, scone loving, youngest brother. The writing was very easy to follow along, same with the plot. The only reason this isn't a full 5 stars for me is that I wasn't BLOWN away. But!!! I still highly recommend, and I think the mystery was very fun to read through. Not to mention, all the family drama was so juuuuuicy, it was like watching a reality tv show, and that's always the best. There's also a second book coming out this year, if I'm thinking correctly. They set up the next one wonderfully, I'm curious to see how the story will progress from here. Go read this!! #SpringPicks

Jennifer Lynn Barnes has a fresh take on mystery with The Inheritance Games series. Why would a complete stranger, a billionaire, will his fortune to Avery Grambs? Her story starts with that one simple question which fractures into infinitely smaller mysteries - the answers to which Avery and disinherited Hawthorne brothers venture to answer. The first in the series, "The Inheritance Games" twists at unexpected turns, and keeps its readers on their toes.
