Overview

The #1 New York Times bestselling debut novel that introduced Khaled Hosseini to millions of readers the world over.

The unforgettable, heartbreaking story of the unlikely friendship between a wealthy boy and the son of his father's servant, caught in the tragic sweep of history, The Kite Runner transports readers to Afghanistan at a tense and crucial moment of change and destruction. A powerful story of friendship, it is also about the power of reading, the price of betrayal, and the possibility of redemption; and an exploration of the power of fathers over sons--their love, their sacrifices, their lies.

Since its publication in 2003 Kite Runner has become a beloved, one-of-a-kind classic of contemporary literature, touching millions of readers, and launching the career of one of America's most treasured writers.

Beautiful story. It has some very dark and disturbing moments, but all around a beautiful story.

It was a really weird, not enjoyable story. Strange choice for required reading in my opinion. #SpringPicks

This book was the first of its kind that I have ever read. Although there was a scene in the book that required me to take a break due to the severity of the content, I thought it was a very well-written novel. I had never read a book in this setting before. It really makes you have an emotional attachment to the characters. I would definitely recommend this book and other written works by this author. #bannedbooks

  • gutting but worth the read

I was fortunate enough to be able to read this book in my sophomore year of high school. My school was not part of a district and governed itself so we were allowed to read this book as required reading for class. It started off really slow in my opinion and I dozed off while my teacher read it aloud but as we started reaching the end I still remember students, myself included, asking our teacher if we could dedicate just a few more minutes to reading a few extra chapters in class. When we reached the final chapters I remember the silence in the room as we all tried to grasp what was happening. It was definitely a hard read but I think it was necessary. Growing up in the US where so many of us are sheltered from the world outside, it was eye opening to be able to read a story about a place we grew up hearing about only on the news. If I have kids one day and they are old enough, I would definitely recommend this book to them as well. #BannedBook
