This book was much better than I originally thought it would be when I read the description on the back. Todd, the main character, lives in a world where men and animals give off what is called "Noise". It's endless thoughts, images, and sounds that make human company exhausting. Todd has been told the history of the new planet and the history of his family many times. Early on in the book, you learn that everything he's ever been told is a lie and he's left alone to find out what's true in the world, protect a silence in the Noise that he found, and also escape an army. The book is filled with twists and turns that you don't expect because all you know is what Todd knows. It's great to learn everything with him and experience those moments of shock when what you thought was true turns out to be a lie. Todd grows immensely as a character from a young boy who does what he is told to a young man who is literally fighting for his life and the life of someone else.
