Post-apocalyptic re-telling of the Ten Thousand
Joe T. - 3 years 5 months agoAs a huge John Ringo fan, I had high expectations for this title. Luckily, he did not disappoint, as this is one of his best. Basically, this is a post-apocalyptic retelling of the true story of the Ten Thousand, a group of Greek Mercenaries who were abandoned by their employers far from home and had to fight their way back. Ringo's story takes this concept and adds the modern of twist of a group of American tank soldiers who were left behind to guard a supply depot outside of Iraq when a worldwide flu epidemic, followed by a financial meltdown caused by a worldwide global cooling trend and government interference and mismanagement of the food production industry and economy, left them in the unenviable position of needing to fight their way across the Middle East for extraction. Part of the way into the book, a group of reporters embeds itself into the tank corps and begins a weekly non-fiction TV program that becomes the top rated TV show worldwide, documenting on TV the recreated march of the Ten Thousand. The combat action is top notch, the characters are memorable and social commentary is biting, especially the all too accurate characterization of Left-Wing government activism that brings on mass starvation due to meddling and an insane stance on organic farming in the middle of the loss of much of the world's food production due to the population decrease and climatic changes. If you are a fan of John Ringo or dystopian or military fiction then the Last Centurion has something for you.

Read it again and again
HPB S. - 5 years 1 month agoThis is a great read. Thought provoking, humorous, and relevant, this is a ride you don't want to end. Ringo makes snark and sarcasm an art form. Loved this book. I walk away with someone new each time I read it. Enjoy. #springpicks

The Last Centurion by John Ringo
Dennis G. - 6 years agoA world-wide pandemic is raging (sound familiar?) and the virulent virus is ravaging the U.S. Meanwhile, Bandit Six is left with a company of infantry on an Iranian island at the mouth of the Tigris. Since the Pentagon is up to its brass in problems back home, the soldiers--to become known as The Centurions--have been abandoned to fend for themselves. Captain Bandit Six and his soldiers fight their way off the island. He then leads his unit in battle after battle across Iraq and Turkey into Ankara. In doing so, Bandit Six redraws the map of the Middle East created in the wake of WWI. When, now Major, Bandit Six finally gets his unit back on U.S. soil, his heroic efforts are "rewarded" with a seat at a help desk in the Pentagon. The pandemic coupled with unusually cold weather has created a food shortage (sound familiar?). Undaunted, he leads the country through a crisis worse than the Great Depression. An irreverent and riotous romp across time and place, "The Last Centurion" by John Ringo confronts politically correct propaganda and conducts a thunder run right over it. Bandit Six is a Centurion for our time!
