Are you a fan of classic slasher flicks? Then this book is for you. Taking place in the familiar setting of a newly reopened summer camp hiding a tragic secret, this thriller will take you on a wild journey to uncover the truth of what really happened during the last year at summer camp. Riley Sager takes a familiar plot and turns it upside down in this edge of your seat read!
HPB Staff ReviewRiley Sager's "The Last Time I Lied" was a great addition to my personal library; it was the kind of mystery that left me satisfied with the nostalgia of camp but left me with plenty of suspense that made me stay up until 4 am to see what happened next. To summarize the book, Emma Davis is a quickly rising artist in New York with her first gallery opening to the public. Her subject; faceless, haunting young girls lost in the forest. Many years ago, when Emma was 13, she went to a sleep away camp for young girls. It was there she met Vivian, Natalie, and Allison, her new bunkmates. They become friends, but then one night, Emma wakes up to find them all leaving the cabin, and Vivian closes the door with a finger over her lips, very "Pretty Little Liars"-esque. Emma had no idea that she'd never see or hear from them again. No one knew where they went, and after a long, uneventful search, they were lost forever with the camp closed down with no answers. Back to present day, at Emma's gallery opening, she is approached by an old familiar face, Mrs. Francesca Harris, the owner of the camp, to tell her that she's reopening the camp and wants Emma to be the new Painting instructor. Emma reluctantly agrees with the hope to return to find out what really happened all those years ago. As the mystery delves deeper into the unknown, the story switches off from past to present, sometimes to clarify what recent discovery happened and helping it all tie together. I dont want to give too much else away; all I know is if you like mystery, this is a top choice to dive into! I actually loved how it took place at a summer camp; some of the buildings mentioned and the overall layout of the camp sent me into a whirlwind of nostalgia for when I went to a camp with a similar feel to it; the wooden cabins with the bunk beds, the massive campfires by the lake, the mosquitoes, the worn down, weathered cabin-style buildings, the cafeteria, the hot older camp counselor all the girls (and me) had a crush on, and the latrines to go take a quick shower before the water always went cold. It made me think of it all for the first time in forever and how much I enjoyed it. I love nostalgia.... The book is also very well written and Riley Sager is excellent at creating rising tension and suspense, even if it may be to a minor event happening or conversation had. He just makes your thoughts jump all over the place and truly get anxious about what happens next. And one last thing, Im glad there was a small speck of romance involved because I confess, Im a sucker for romance and a happy ending pertaining to it.
