Most cleaning literature addresses organization and storage techniques with dull how-to steps and crafty tricks. The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying is different by using autobiographical stories of the author Marie Kondo to illustrate the positive life changes that decluttering can provide. The main premise of the book is to keep one's belongings to the things that spark joy. People should have a more emotional intuitive relationship with one's belongings instead of hoarding or simply reorganizing. Mixing Fung Shui with purging belongings, we can learn to live more simple lives. Kondo writes with purpose and has several anecdotal stories that are both funny and enlightening. I recommend The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up to everyone to gain a new perspective on cleaning the clutter.
HPB Staff ReviewI discovered this book just as I was getting fed up with the sheer mass of my possessions. I didn't realize it until after I started following this book's advice, but I was suffocating under the weight (and financial burden) of all the stuff I felt like I should own. This book is not a minimalist propaganda piece. Rather, it is a helpful tool in getting rid of things you don't love or need, then organizing the rest. Marie Kondo lays out the order to tackle things (clothes, books, papers, miscellaneous, and sentimental items), so that you start with something that is typically least emotionally charged as a warm up. As an avid reader, I was worried that getting rid of books would be the most difficult, but even books carry unnecessary baggage, and sometimes it really is better to let go. All in all, I donated 3/4 of my wardrobe, 1/2 of my books and 9/10 of my papers and notebooks. The rest is ongoing, but I literally feel lighter and happier. Kondo's method really does work!
HPB Staff ReviewI ADORED this book, and regularly tell customers that it is my favorite. Clutter and mess can often distract us from life, but Marie Kondo explains her method for cleansing your life of this problem. If followed accurately, you can finish the KonMari Method with both a clean house and a new perspective on life!
HPB Staff ReviewThis book is worth every penny I spent on it! I am a new minimalist coming from a background of hoarding tendencies and am constantly looking for books that will encourage a clutter-free life. I still had issues with letting go of "sentimental" items and was looking for a solution when I picked this book up. Not only did the book remind me that I *still* had items I could let go of...but it indeed gave me the solution I had been looking for for so long! Marie Kondo has a beautifully simple way of walking you through the process of "letting go" that makes you EXCITED to go through and purge your junk! This book is for both sides of the spectrum when it comes to how much you want to organize. Whether it be an extreme minimalist or someone who needs encouragement just to clean their garage out. A clear living space makes for a clear mind. Enjoy!
HPB Staff Review"You will never use spare buttons." WORDS WE ALL NEED TO HEAR. I really thoroughly loved this book. I've always been interested in minimalism - trying to stop material goods being the things that bring us happiness, and not owning more than we need - and picked this book up after hearing a few people around me enjoy it. I was hoping it would give me a few tips on how to lead a more clutter-free existence, and while it accomplished that, it also did so much more. The thing that most stuck me about this book was the immense respect that the author, (who feels like my friend after reading this, a gentle companion through this process), shows to all possessions. She understands that this is an emotional process, and her ideas are not about guilt. She isn't saying "You're a fool for allowing all of this garbage into your life! Get rid of it all at once!" Instead she's saying "All of these things came into your life for a reason, take your time considering them, and then thank them and let them go onto the next stage of existence." It's all so kind and loving and made me not feel guilty or fear the process. I also really liked the structure of this book. It has a solid introduction, a clear process, a section of tips, and then a conclusion. It's very straightforward and doesn't feel complex or gimmicky. It all feels like common sense. It also had key points in bold which helped in figuring out the main thesis of different sections. The book focuses on tidying your house, but for me (and most of the people reading this) we don't own a house, we own one room. I don't think this matters for two reasons. Firstly, the ideas and methods in this book can be perfectly applied to your space, no matter how extensive it is. It's all about creating the most positive space imaginable, and that is very achievable with just one room. Secondly, this book was very much a philosophy. It's about learning to reflect on the relationship between you and your possessions and is something I will carry with me moving forward in life. Someday I will move out of my parents house and into my own house/apartment and I am extremely grateful that I have read this book and will be able to start that journey with this knowledge. Thank you, Marie, for sharing what you've learned, I'm very excited to start my journey of only surrounding myself with things that I love and bring me joy. #SpringPicks
