Embrace Hygge (pronounced hoo-ga) and become happier with this definitive guide to the Danish philosophy of comfort, togetherness, and well-being.
Why are Danes the happiest people in the world? The answer, says Meik Wiking, CEO of the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen, is Hygge. Loosely translated, Hygge--pronounced Hoo-ga--is a sense of comfort, togetherness, and well-being. "Hygge is about an atmosphere and an experience," Wiking explains. "It is about being with the people we love. A feeling of home. A feeling that we are safe."
Hygge is the sensation you get when you're cuddled up on a sofa, in cozy socks under a soft throw, during a storm. It's that feeling when you're sharing comfort food and easy conversation with loved ones at a candlelit table. It is the warmth of morning light shining just right on a crisp blue-sky day.
The Little Book of Hygge introduces you to this cornerstone of Danish life, and offers advice and ideas on incorporating it into your own life, such as:
From picking the right lighting to organizing a Hygge get-together to dressing hygge, Wiking shows you how to experience more joy and contentment the Danish way.

I've often wondered about how happy people were 100 years ago, without social media, instant information and electric lights. Were we more in touch with seasonal changes and community? Did we eat better? Were we happier? According to the Danes and their theory of Hygee, perhaps we were. But creating simplicity and joy in life today isn't that hard according to The Little Book of Hygee. This book advises practical steps toward happiness (step one: buy a lot of candles), but also helps one pare down and find what truly makes us happy. Happiness may be achieved by eliminating white light and white noise and setting aside cozy time with people you actually know and care about. Ditch Facebook and embrace Hygee.
HPB Staff ReviewHygge (pronounced hoo-ga) helps to remind us to take time to appreciate the little things in life. This book teaches the reader not only how to practice hygge, but how to recognize how we may have been participating in it already without even realizing it. Hygge is hard to define, and yet so easy to feel and experience. In the English language we don't have a word for this experience, yet the Danish have perfectly described it as, "being consciously cozy", or, "the art of creating a nice atmosphere". Author Meik Wiking describes it as "being together with the people you love. It's about relaxation, indulgence, good food, gratitude, and equality. All of those things mixed together is hygge. Naming it and recognizing it gives it power. You know hygge when you feel it". Hygge can be something as simple as allowing yourself time to curl up with a good book and a cozy blanket in your favorite spot. It can be an experience you share with friends, or family, by having a get together where you share food and take the time to actively listen. No cell phones, no outside distractions, just a focus on time spent bonding together. This experience has a focus on reclaiming time in a hectic day to focus on spending time creating a cozy atmosphere to enhance your own, or the living experience of others. Let Meik Wiking be your guide into the world of hygge. You'll soon begin to see how to create this experience on your own and how to share it with others.
HPB Staff ReviewThis book made me so incredibly happy while reading it. The phenomenon and idea of hygge is something that appeals to my very soul, and it is something that I want to try and implement far more in my life than I already am. As my main resolution for this year is to stay happy, it seems inevitable that I would work towards the hygge lifestyle. #SpringPicks
