Overview
At the same time Adolf Hitler was attempting to take over the western world, his armies were methodically seeking and hoarding the finest art treasures in Europe. The Fuehrer had begun cataloguing the art he planned to collect as well as the art he would destroy: "degenerate" works he despised.
In a race against time, behind enemy lines, often unarmed, a special force of American and British museum directors, curators, art historians, and others, called the Momuments Men, risked their lives scouring Europe to prevent the destruction of thousands of years of culture. Focusing on the eleven-month period between D-Day and V-E Day, this fascinating account follows six Monuments Men and their impossible mission to save the world's great art from the Nazis.

The Monuments Men is more than worth the read
Tamera C. - 5 years 6 months agoEven though I consider myself a student of WWII literature and history, I was unaware of the soldiers, both British and American, who saved European art and treasures during the war. I found I could not put this book down.... it is both intriguing and educational and worthy of the efforts to rescue books. paintings, sculpture, architecture by brave people determined these treasures would not be lost forever to the Nazis. I highly recommend #SpringPicks

Good read
Mark G. - 6 years 4 months agoThe Monumental Men is a lovely book that gives insight about the culture, values and importance of pieces of Western Civilizations. It’s so fascinating to me that the US Military would create a Monumental group to send to Europe to protect places, buildings, and works of art. I recommend this book to those who appreciate art and who enjoy reading nonfiction WWII novels. #SummerReading
