The Moonstone, a priceless Indian diamond which had been brought to England as spoils of war, is given to Rachel Verrinder on her eighteenth birthday. That very night, the stone is stolen. Suspicion then falls on a hunchbacked housemaid, on Rachel's cousin Franklin Blake, on a troupe of mysterious Indian jugglers, and on Rachel herself.
The phlegmatic Sergeant Cuff is called in, and with the help of Betteredge, the Robinson Crusoe-reading loquacious steward, the mystery of the missing stone is ingeniously solved.

A classic, intelligent, well-written mystery novel.
Katherine F. - 2 years 6 months agoT.S. Eliot called The Moonstone "the first, the longest and the best of modern English detective novels." Hearing this statement might make one skeptical, but as a life-long lover of books and of literature I can assure you that this book is most certainly worthy of such praise. While the story admittedly starts off rambly and rather slow, it really picks up within the first few chapters and does not disappoint. This book has everything, people. I could go on forever about how much I enjoyed it, but in short, The Moonstone is an intelligent, well-written mystery novel that is full of secrets, drama, intrigue, humor, death, new life, friendship, likable and loathsome characters, and even a hint of romance for all you saps out there (like me). If you are looking to read a classic novel that will keep you continuously entertained, I would make The Moonstone your next pick.
