Willy Vlautin's debut novel mines that downtrodden, uniquely American territory at the intersection of John Steinbeck and Raymond Carver. With nary a wasted word, Vlautin outlines the heartbreaking story of two brothers that often find themselves on the wrong side of a bad decision. On the run, in the aftermath of a tragic accident, they find the road isn't any safer than home (if they ever truly had a home) and wherever they go, they take their penchant for small-time self-destruction with them. You can't outrun your past or yourself, but sometimes you run anyway. Highly recommended! If you like this, you should also check out Willy's band, Richmond Fontaine, for some musical excursions in the same vein.
